An Associated Press investigation has found that two of America's biggest retail banks Chase and Wells Fargo are quietly using some callers' voiceprints to fight fraud.

Privacy advocates and legal experts question the practice. Customers who call bank support numbers are often informed that their calls may be monitored or recorded, but aren't asked to give their consent for biometric analysis.

Fraud blacklists are among the growing everyday uses of speaker recognition, once a high-tech tool used by security agencies. Many governments and businesses use voiceprinting.

A recent Associated Press survey of the market found that more than 65 million people worldwide have had their voiceprints taken.

It's news that is quite likely to get the attention of Kmart shoppers. The parent company of the department store chain says a data breach at Kmart stores may have compromised some customers' credit and debit cards. Sears Holdings Corporation says the breach started last month and detected by its I-T department late last week. It's unclear how many cards were affected. But Sears believes no personal information, debit card PIN numbers or other personal information leaked to hackers. A man in Nevada had to be airlifted to a Reno hospital after he jumped into a desert hot spring to rescue a dog. Fire officials say the man was scalded late Friday afternoon. Water in the hot springs can reach about 180 degrees, and a fence was installed around them after similar accidents in the past. The fate of the dog is unknown.
